Port Alberni Shelter and Supportive Housing
3939 8th Ave. Port Alberni
The Port Alberni Shelter Society had been trying for a number of years to construct additional transitional and shelter accommodation to replace the inadequate and crowded facility on 8th Ave. The provision of surplus land from Island Health and with the support of the City of Port Alberni, BC Housing has now enabled the construction of 30 units of modular two-storey wood frame, transitional housing with shelter accommodation for 15 individuals and a family. All transitional units are self-contained and include a bathroom and kitchenette. A multi-purpose wet-weather room will be used for additional extreme weather shelter spaces in the winter months. A full commercial kitchen, dining and activity spaces and a sheltered south facing courtyard are provided.Although the project is of modular construction the design intent through simple modulation of units and rooflines was to create a building that did not appear “modular”.
The Project was design-build providing a wonderful opportunity for designers and builders to integrate their knowledge with the end result of a high quality, durable and sustainable building that will provide permanent accommodation for a disenfranchised portion of the population in Port Alberni.
